Zoloft Effective in Long-term Treatment of Obsessive-compulsive Disorder, Study Shows

FaxWatch Inc. - February 28, 2002

Pfizer Inc.'s Zoloft (sertraline) provides sustained efficacy among patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder, new research showed.

Individuals who met certain criteria after 16 and 52 weeks of one trial were randomly assigned to an additional 28 weeks of Zoloft treatment or placebo.

The primary outcomes of the study were full relapse, study dropout due to relapse or insufficient treatment response or acute exacerbation of OCD symptoms.

Among the 232 patients who completed the second phase of the study, Zoloft demonstrated significantly greater effectiveness than placebo on two study outcomes: dropout due to relapse or insufficient response and acute exacerbation of symptoms.

Zoloft therapy also resulted in an improvement in the quality of life during the initial 52-week trial and continued improvement that was significantly superior to placebo during the subsequent 28-week trial.
