US psychologists say violent acts could be caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. It has long been believed that some head injuries lead to outbursts of aggression, but this is the first time that uncontrollable anger has been linked to a problem in the way the brain functions. Researchers at Children's Hospital in Philadelphia believe some violent individuals may be suffering from undiagnosed intermittent explosive disorder. This condition is thought to be linked to a malfunction in part of the brain's circuitry, which may in turn be caused by an imbalance in a neurotransmitter. (BBC News Online 28/05/02)
