Study shows stress causes girls to smoke
16 November 2001
A new study from The Australian National University suggests
that stress is the main reason more teenage girls take up smoking than boys. The
study suggests that girls are vulnerable to stresses other than peer pressure,
including worries about family, school and the future, and that smoking is a way
of trying to alleviate anxiety. The researchers say that government campaigns
against smoking need to take those concerns into account, and promote
self-esteem, motivation and achievement to help reduce smoking among teenage
girls.
