Legalization of Marijuana — Potential
Impact on Youth
June 7, 2004 — The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) opposes
the legalization of marijuana for adults as it could increase adolescent use,
according to a new policy entitled, "Legalization of Marijuana: Potential
Impact on Youth." Alcohol and tobacco, which are both legal for adults, are
the two drugs most widely used by adolescents. While scientific research to
determine whether marijuana has therapeutic effects is just beginning, the
significant consequences of acute and long-term marijuana use are
well-documented, according to the policy. Negative side effects include problems
with short-term memory, concentration, attention span, motivation, and problem
solving, as well as other health risks associated with smoking, comparable to
tobacco use. The AAP supports rigorous scientific research regarding the use of
marijuana for the relief of symptoms not currently alleviated with existing,
legal drugs.
