House-husbands at high risk of heart attacks

25 April 2002

House-husbands and female executives are more likely to suffer a fatal heart attack than men and women whose careers follow more traditional gender patterns, scientists have discovered. Long-term research in the US has found that men and women whose social roles do not conform to sexual stereotypes often pay for their decisions with an increased risk of coronary heart disease. The results suggest that the stress of fulfilling a role that is widely perceived as unusual may be an important risk factor in heart disease.
