Energy Boost Fights Migraines
April 29, 2004(Ivanhoe Newswire) -- New research shows you may now be able to rid yourself of migraines while giving your body a daily energy boost.
According to researchers from the University Hospitals in Zurich, Switzerland, migraine patients taking the energy supplement coenzyme Q10 had fewer monthly incidents of migraine.
Coenzyme is the "energy producing" antioxidant and is made naturally by the body. It can also be found in meat and seafood.
The study involved nearly 45 patients suffering an average of four migraine attacks per month. Part of the group was given 100 milligrams daily of coenzyme Q10 while the remaining was given a placebo.
Results show 48 percent of the patients taking coenzyme reduced their attacks by half, as opposed to the 14 percent taking placebo. Coenzyme Q10 patients also had fewer days with nausea.
Peter S. Sandor, M.D., lead author of the study, says, "We also found that the only side effect appeared to be an allergic skin rash in one patient. This compares with side effects of fatigue, weight gain, dry mouth, and other side effects found with other methods to prevent migraine."
The study was supported by MSE, makers of dietary supplements and vitamins.
