As many as 1 in 10 doctors working in accident and emergency (A&E) departments has contemplated suicide because of job stress, according to research showing that A&E consultants have stress levels twice as high as those of their colleagues. Researcher Dr Susan Robinson, of Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge, says the findings are unsurprising. She says, "We had a feeling that there was a degree of psychological distress generally," and urges action to improve the working conditions of A&E doctors. (BBC News Online 23/04/02)
