
May 19, 2002 (The Age - ABIX via COMTEX) -- Support from family and friends is the most effective treatment for depression, Australians believe. A survey of attitudes about depression found that exercise and yoga were also rated highly as remedies, followed by psychological therapies and psychotherapy. The most harmful remedies for depression were found to be sleeping tablets, antidepressant pills, self-help books and psychotherapy. The study found that many of the 20 per cent of Australians who suffer from depression used self-help remedies. None of these were as good as seeking professional help, the researchers said.
